TABLE: CLEAVAGE

FINALIST IN THE CAESARSTONE DESIGN CHALLENGE 2008

CLEAVAGE |klēvij|  noun: a sharp division; a split : the splitting of rocks or crystals in a preferred plane or direction.

The design began with investigating crystal geometries then simplifying it to a two dimensional shape. The result was a triangular profile tapered from an 1 1/2” to 1/4“ creating a razor stone edge. The shape was extruded creating all three surfaces. The thickened edge nearly disappears when two are set together, revealing an almost impossible paper thin stone table.

The separation or cleavage divides the table into two pieces making it lighter and more easily maneuverable, as well as allowing the table to become multi-functional as a buffet or console table as an independent piece.

CaesarStone :: CaesarStone quartz surfaces are known for their heat, stain, scratch, mold, and mildew resistant properties. It is an obvious transition from the kitchen counter top into the dining room table. These properties also combine to form a low maintenance material that out performs conventional stone with a more consistent, monolithic aesthetic.

Sustainability ::  The table module (width) was designed with the standard CaesarStone slab dimension (54”x120”) in mind to reduce waste to nearly zero. Three 18” widths, 10’ long can then be cut depending on the table size. The various table proportions were also chosen to maximize material.
